Winter can be a fun time of the year. Snowball fights, snow forts, building snowmen, sledding, and even ice skating can make the dreary winter a blast. While you and your kids are outside, it's essential to know how to stay safe. Preparing incorrectly can lead from discomfort to a hazard like frostbite or hypothermia. But, it’s relatively easy to keep safe in the winter wonderland. 

Layers are your best friends.

Layers are the best way to stay warm and comfy in the cold. Though it may seem like a cliché of an idea, it’s better to shed a layer when you have others underneath than losing a jacket and freezing right away. Kids will usually need at least one more layer than you will. Depending on the temperature, this can be one extra layer or two for the colder situations. 

You want to start with long johns for boys as a good base layer. Choose a lightweight synthetic or wool material for ultimate heat retention and moisture-wicking. Their ability to pull moisture from their skin through the breathable fabric is essential in protecting your kids from frostbite or hypothermia. In fact, thermal underwear for boys will help regulate your kid's body temperature along with its heat retention features.

For the second layer, choose a sweater or a flannel shirt for added insulation and a pair of pants to cover the legs. Try to avoid cotton as it absorbs moisture, which is terrible in cold temperatures. Now that your kids are bundled up, it seems you are missing that one thing to complete the layers. That is the hat. Don’t forget a scarf, some earmuffs if the hat doesn’t cover their ears, mittens or gloves, and even a facemask if needed. 

Take along something to drink.

No matter the weather, hydration is vital. Your kids will be breathing harder while outside in the cold. A lot of their body’s water is lost through their breath. Some water and even a thermos of hot and tasty soup are perfect for staying hydrated and keeping those energy levels up.

Take some breaks.

No one wants the fun to stop, but breaks are needed to refuel and making sure the kids are feeling well.If it looks like they’re shivering, bring them inside to warm up and play inside. As much as they may love the winter weather, safety is more critical, as frostbite can set in if you don’t pay attention.

While winter can be fun, wearing the right long johns for boys will make it safe. Layer as needed and keep an eye on the weather in case a cold front moves in with a winter storm.
