When the snow starts to fly, and as the temperature drops, kids want to play. After all, snowball fights, snowmen, and sledding are far better than staying indoors. Unlike summer, allowing your kids outside in the winter can be a bit of a production. Between weather checks and layers of clothing, making sure they’re ready to go and remain protected is a challenge.
When it comes to going outside, there’s a lot of effort and a lot of gear. Besides kids' thermals, you may be wondering what the essential piece of gear to have. Here is a list of must-haves when it comes to winter gear essentials.
1. Boy’s long underwear set – while you may not always need thermals, it's best to have some available when the temperature drops below 30-degree Fahrenheit. It’s great to keep your kid warm. Avoid cotton thermals as they’ll do the opposite.
2. Snow pants and jacket – When it comes to the cold, make sure that whatever you clothe your kid with is insulated. Each layer helps protect your kid from the cold. Outer layers or shells aren’t going to be insulated enough unless there’s a couple of layers underneath. Also, look for clothing that won’t restrict their movements as kids prefer to run free.
3. Snow boots – If the snow is deep, then boots with a drawstring top will be fantastic in keeping snow away from your kid’s feet. If they’re waterproof or at least water-resistant, then that makes them even better.
4. Waterproof gloves or mittens – Your kid’s hands are more likely to suffer from frostbite then their core. Fleece-lined gloves or mittens that are waterproof will help them warm and dry
5. Hats – A warm hat will go far in keeping heat from escaping. Fleece-lined is best, and something that’ll cover your kid’s little ears is essential.
6. Neck gaiter – while many may use a scarf, this can prove a choking hazard if it gets stuck on something. Neck gaiter will help keep the neck warm. Some will also cover your kid’s head.
7. Wool socks – To keep your kid’s feet warm and toasty in the snow, wool socks are a vital part of cold-weather gear. They wick away sweat and retain heat, so less chance of your kid complaining about cold feet.
8. Thermos – This is mainly for hot chocolate and other warm liquids that your kid may enjoy. Keeping them hydrated and ready to go is crucial to their safety and comfort.
9. Food – Kids burn through calories like crazy. While outdoors, having the good snacks on hand will be perfect in keeping them fueled up for playtime.
Kids’ thermals are the most critical part of the list. While a jacket is excellent, it won’t fully protect your kids from the cold. A boy’s long underwear set will provide the best base layer for warmth and dryness during the winter months.
